ACS25 in San Sebastián was one of those events where hallway conversations were just as insightful as the talks. As someone who works on the software side of physical security, I paid close attention to what system integrators, product teams, and tech leads were concerned with, not just what was on stage. A few themes came up again and again, so I took time afterward to dig into current numbers and reports just to check whether those impressions were backed up by reality. They were. Here are three shifts that are already shaping how physical access gets built, managed, and maintained, along with some data to back it up. 1. Mobile access is no longer just a trend Even a year ago, in the HID Access Control Report, 61% of security professionals ranked mobile credentials as the most important change happening in physical access. Around two-thirds of organizations are either already using them or planning to roll them out soon. That matches what I saw at ACS25 since mobile came up in every discussion. The thinking is simple: people use their phones for everything else, so why carry a badge? With NFC, BLE, and UWB built into modern smartphones, there is no technical barrier anymore. Mobile wallets make it easy to unlock a door with the same gesture you use to pay for coffee. That said, there are still some details to sort out, like privacy concerns, employee device policies, and visual ID standards. However, the direction is clear: any system being specified today must be mobile-ready and, in many SMB-size cases, mobile-first. 2. Predictive maintenance is starting to get its momentum The latest research shows that 40% of facility managers already use predictive checks to catch problems early. And 60% say it is the most effective way to bring down maintenance costs. That makes sense because most security gear fails slowly: a lock might lag, a battery dies all of a sudden. These issues are easy to miss until something breaks at the wrong time. By leveraging AI data analysis, systems can detect issues early, reduce downtime, and make overall planning easier. Paired with monitoring dashboards that flag issues with simple, actionable alerts like "Camera X is drifting out of focus" or "Reader Y battery is nearing end-of-life due to extensive entrance usage," the setup provides better visibility. And for integrators, it opens up real opportunities for smarter service contracts. 3. Interfaces are finally getting easier to use Security platforms have always been powerful. They have also been hard to navigate unless you are a trained operator. This is changing with the integration of AI technologies, making these systems more accessible to a broader range of users. The idea is simple: instead of clicking through 12 menus, just type (or say), "Add a badge for contractor X on Tuesday" or "What triggered the alarm last night?" The system handles the rest. This shift will not replace experienced security operators first, but it will make systems more usable and cut down on training time. For most businesses, that is a welcome change. One final note All of these changes (mobile-first access, more reliable hardware monitoring, and friendlier interfaces) point to one thing: software is no longer just a layer of physical security.
